I am trying to add a little more old world look to my home with accessories. I love a comfy, frenchy, traditional and old world feel to a home.
So I decided to age it a little. First I gave the whole frame a really good coat of Minwax Walnut stain and let it sink into all the grooves. Then I took a soft rag and wiped some of it off. This takes about 2 days to dry, however it is worth it. Than I just spray a little black paint onto a paper towel and gently wipe the entire frame just hitting all the carving and giving it a really old look. Much better don't you think.
Now my little rooster print that I printed off the Internet for Free looks so much more elegant and interesting.
Great way to take an old frame that's a little gold and dated and turn it into something you will really enjoy.

Thanks so much for stopping by, I always look forward to your visits.
P.S. Several want to know where to find the free art. There is a site that is http://www.freespiritart.com/. They have a lot of different categories on their sidebar. I find most of mine under the Farm Animals heading. Just right click and copy and then paste to your picture file and print to whatever size you want.

you're not only a decorating diva, but so smart in your how-to's. Excellent job!
ReplyDeleteGlad you had fun with your friends too.

Great idea, Marty! It does tone it down a bit and add just that little bit of aging, which really works well with all the details in this frame.
ReplyDeleteI love how it turned out! It looks great against the wall color!

ReplyDeleteGreat tip! Will certainly keep this in mind. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThat turned out so nicely - I have a gold frame or two that would benefit from a bit of aging.
ReplyDeleteJust what are these people thinking when they sell something so gorgeous for ONE DOLLAR? And you transformed it beautifully.

That really does add just the right touch of old world charm Marty! Thanks so much for sharing this at Inspiration Friday!

Marty, that is a really good idea. I have a huge mirror that was gold and I took black paint and water and just lightly 'painted' it. I have used it for the last 4 years and now I have a black dining room so I am trying to decide what to do to it now.
ReplyDeleteI love the use of the stain & paint together.
I really need to do this with some of my picture frames.
ReplyDeleteYours looks beautiful, Marty.
Very nice. I had a carved golden mirror from a thrift shop that I just applied some paint remover and wiped off leaving some bare wood, white and gold traces...more shabby chic than yours. But fun.

PS. I love your comment on your Profile about changing you photo so we can recognize you on the street! Ha! inspired me to do the same (but I like that my new one is sort of blurry).

Hi Marty! I just love what you've done to give your frame that vintage "antiqued" look. It's gorgeous. Thanks for sharing the products that you used. That is always so helpful! ~ Susie
ReplyDeleteMarty,Thank you for visiting me and leaving your kind words behind.Your frame looks gorgeous.wonderful job,you need a pat on the back for that one.I'm going to visit that free image site, thanks for telling us about it.
ReplyDeleteI love the way the frame turned out! I have three gold frames I picked up at the Salvation Army that I think I will need to try this on! Good job! Blessings Paula <3
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you showed us how to do that!!
ReplyDeleteI bought a bunch of crosses and other 'ornaments' at the after Christmas sales that I knew would be beautiful everyday pieces, but they are super gold. I think I'll do this to some of them instead of just painting them and then distresing them. Thanks! :)
Such a neat technique, I tried this with black paint and it wasn't the effect I wanted. I will have to try this! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLooks fantastic. I love what just a little did to it. Have a great day.
