Remember this cute little rooster I found at goodwill that looks like the brother to my big one. Well, I had my pan of hot soapy water and I was cleaning the kitchen as usual and this little guy got all sticky. The more I scrubbed, the more his finish started coming off. I found out his stain was really yucky kitchen grease, or at least I am guessing.
Now I am not a clean freak, but I am a fanatic about a clean kitchen and I just couldn't handle that, so I got out the Soft Scrub and really started to scrub. When I got through, it was totally white, no glazing at all. Really looked sort of sad.
So out came the stain and I got busy trying to give this little guy back a little character.
Ok, not too bad, still needs a little more playing with.
That's much better, but the base is way too yellow. Got to work on that.
A finish coat of clear to match the big one and I called it good. Now I know it is clean and he shines like his big brother. Much better.

I LOVE it! You are right it didn't look good chalk white. You did an excellent job... NOW Marty I don't want to pry, BUT I think your "rooster" MAY be a hen. and actually I think the two look like a perfect couple!!! Now stand back and look at the two of them and tell me what you think??? Are there eggs in their future???

Oh how funny Marty! This sounds like something I would do! I wash everything;)! I could never bring something home...plop it in it's spot and call it a day! My kids say I have OCD...obsessive compulsive disorder.

You did GOOD though!!! I think that a little dark stain and another shiny of coat of shine...did the trick! You're sooo clever! Marty, that is funny. You cleaned off the grease that was adding the patina and then he was too white so you fixed him with stain. Very good job.
ReplyDeleteOh, Marty, I thought you were going to say he slipped from the soapy water and broke! Whew! : ) I scrub everything that comes home with me from Goodwill. In fact, one of the first things I do once I have everything in is fill the sink with hot water and soap. I think you got him looking good though and I was wondering if you were going to put a clear coat on top. I love that whole vignette!

ReplyDeleteIt turned out great! I remember once, I used nail polish remover to remove the stickiness left from a price tag on what I thought was a glazed pot. The nail polish remover took off the paint! So I had to spray paint the pot.

Yikes! I bet you almost croaked when you realized his "varnish" was grease. I'm so happy that you were able to get him spiffed up. The poor little guy looked pretty naked after his cleaning :)
