Fall in the Desert

In the desert we are just the opposite of most of you weather wise. You have had wonderful summers and a lot of pretty flowers and a chance to enjoy the outdoors. We have been up to 110 or much higher since May, so there are no flowers, a lot of things have died and the yard desperately needs attention. Since it's cooled down now to 99 degrees and the cooler temps are just around the corner, I am really ready to perk up the yard and start enjoying the outdoors.

This is a picture of an area where all of the plants died. I cleared all the dead ones out and am ready to create a place to sit and relax.

This is a little bench that I bought for $10 at a thrift shop a few years ago. A fresh coat of Antique White paint and it looks good as new.

A trip to the nursery for some pretty flowers and trying to figure out an arrangement for some pots.

I think this is going to work. I love the red geraniums and white petunias together. The smaller pot has Cabaret yellow in it and will fill out and drape down the side of the pots.

Adding a couple of pillows that I've had for years and my little garden fairies and this is starting to look inviting.

I've added a couple of pots on the edge of the patio, so I'm at least on my way to getting a few flowers blooming. Still a lot to go.

I can't wait until these all grow and really fill out the pots and drape down the sides.

Thanks so much for stopping by, I always appreciate your visits and hope you come again soon.

Hugs, Marty

That makes a pretty spot. It doesn't get too cold in Florida either.

Marty, I had never thought about the desert and flowers, as we are getting ready for indoor living, you are able to come outside and enjoy the beauty. I love red geraniums so much! Thanks for sharing, have a great weekend! Sue

I love that metal stand that holds the round container with the white petunias. Perhaps you don't enjoy the outdoors in August, but you can enjoy it while we are freeze drying up north.

It's all looking so nice. I love the bench! That was a great bargain!

Marty-It does seem completely foreign to me to be planting now! I am ready to rip out all my dead things and just plant a few pansies. I know you have dry heat as opposed to our humidity, but 110 is just HOT anyway you cut it :) I know you are looking forward to spending time in your pretty little corner--looks great!

Oh Marty...it looks so pretty! That's where I'd have my coffee in teh mornings! I am still so amazed at how different the seasons are for you! I really had no idea! It's like you get another Spring while we are dealing with the onset of Winter!! Just gorgeous!! Happy weekend...hugs...Debbie

Hi Marty! I think you are gonna have a lovely place to relax there. :) I just read your blog and you were born in Texas. :) Yippee! It probably doesn't get that cold in Arizona either. I can't wait to see your progress on your garden, my friend. Take care.
Blessings,
Sandra

Beautiful!!! I am in Alabama and we don't have that much cold weather either, but I do have to bring my "precious" plants in! You are lucky to be able to enjoy it year round!

And this is a gorgeous setting!! Love geraniums!

Have a great weekend!!

Marty, you have a lovely spot to enjoy the winter. Here in TX we can put out new things this time of year as well. It's so different from our friends up north who are preparing for winter. :-) Have a great weekend. ~ Sarah

Marty, I'm trying to imagine a climate like that. You have certainly made a charming oasis in the desert land. I was noticing that my petunias are spent and acorns are fallin on my deck. Does it ever get cold there? Linda

Hi Marty,
Well, I'll be there in a month! I sure hope its down in the 80's by then. My son and wife talk about the cabin fever they have during the summer there while we'll have a bad case come January. Your outdoor sanctuary is so lovely, our geraniums are starting to look a little scraggy, yours are just coming to life! Hugs, Cindy

Hi Marty - Your little sitting area looks so pretty! Love your little bench - it is just perfect for that spot - our high for tomorrow is supposed to be 69 and rainy! We are heading to the mall though so it won't bother us - Meghan needs some new "dressier" clothes for the games that she'll assist at.

Oh, I love, love, love what you did with your table arrangement and how you sprayed your pumpkins - what a clever idea to make them blend better with your decor. Have you seen the DIY blog's take on mercury painted pumpkins? To.die.for - they are gorg - I cannot wait to do some like that. I have her blog on my "list that I follow" if you want to check her's out!

Have a good one and try to "stay cool" friend -

What a pretty spot to enjoy! My flowers are still looking pretty, but not for long...maybe another month to enjoy. The temps are around 80 degrees during the day still. I love flowers and when winter comes, I get a little depressed!

Beautiful arrangement! Have you loved the somewhat cooler weather we are enjoying? I know that in the early morning hours I have loved turning off the AC and opening the windows and doors to the low 70's weather.

I always use red geraniums and white petunias. Truly my fav combo. I haven't started yet.....couple more weeks. I do want to get a few more pots this year. So pretty...still gotta see in person one day!

What you have done looks lovely and I agree, a very nice spot to have morning tea or coffee.

I chuckled when I read what Smiling Sally wrote. It depends on what part of FL you live in. Here in N FL we get a good bit of below freezing temperatures but they are not sustained days and days of freezing weather. I lose quite a few of my perenniels but the good news is that in late Oct. I can plant pansies, snapdragons, petunias and other annuals that enjoy cooler temps and enjoy them throughout the winter months. I feel like I have the best of both worlds living in N FL.

I have another friend who lives in Arizona and she had told me the same thing about nothing blooming there.

Marty, can you grow Hibiscus or Bouganvilla in Arizona? They are tropicals but in S FL bloom year round. Just a thought. Here in N FL they die back to the ground when we get our first freeze.

Your garden is pretty - really like the bench.I remember what the Summers were like when I lived in Phoenix. I think I was the only one in the neighborhood that would get out and water in the evening just to keep a little green going. I knew I was in trouble when I got off the plane and it was 116. I did not live there that long.

It's a beautiful setting, Marty. Just about the time your flowers are trailing down the sides of those pots, we will probably have snow on the ground.:-) I'll come by here to be reminded of spring!

Happy Weekend!

Isn't it wonderful that the days are getting a little cooler. Your back yard reminds me of ours. We have grass with rocks around it and a fence just like yours. Great buy you got on the bench. Yes yes yes, I'm glad it's cooling off here in the desert. I like your little angels too.

Love how your yard is looking. We are still having warm weather here in the North Bay area(meaning north of SF). Today it got up to 96 or so. I looked at your tablescape post too and it is gorgeous. Just love it.

Thanks for your encouraging visit to my post!

Well at least you still have green grass Marty. Ours went all brown last summer and thank heavens we had some winter rain this year or it would still be that way. We are not allowed to water our gardens unless we use tank water and we tend to save that for washing the car and the special plants.
You have done a wonderful job with re-potting and that little corner looks very pretty and inviting ... I love all your fairies, they're gorgeous. I only have one, that my mum bought me ... I would like more.
Enojoy your weekend.
Warmest hugs,
Sandi

Marty, thank you for commenting on my china cabinet on my blog. Yes.. pictures would be great. I want to put one of my husband and me when we got married since the china is our wedding china.
Also, I love that dark purple tree in your pictures. What is it called? I think it would do well in deep south Texas since you have it in Arizona. What do you think?
How neat to change your living room decor according to the seasons. I always think I want to do that and just never get around to it. Your blog is such an inspiration!

I'd be sitting back in that little area with a book and some iced tea. What a bargain little bench, and what a nice job you did of bringing back your old bench from your parents. Paint, varnish, and stain can do so much, can't they?
Enjoy your time planting and making your yard look pretty!
