I would like to share a very special collection to me. It's my antique clock collection. These are mostly from my mother's collection. When she passed away I was so fortunate to be able to have several of her clocks. They are all prized posessions. While I don't know a lot about them, how old they are or where they were made, they are still precious to me.

These hang in my hallway right off the living room. The first one is one that is really special because my mom made it. She had the works out of an antique clock, but no case, so she made sort of a copy of another one she had and put the works inside. She loved woodworking and even had her own laithe. Very talented.

This shows two "kitchen clocks". They were called that because they were really cheap and made out of scrap wood and the pattern was just pressed in. The 1904 Sears catalogue shows various styles of this clock for about $2.50. They were made to sit or hang. I love all the detail and they are all 7 day wind. The bottom one has a pendalum that hangs from the bottom. I have it stored so it doesn't get knocked off. These were seen in a lot of businesses and offices.

This one also hangs in the hall and is a Regulator. They were often called school clocks, but used everywhere.

This is a real school clock. When one of the schools was scheduled to be demolished in L.A. my uncle asked for this clock and they gave it to him. If you notice the white buttons at the bottom, these were used to ring the bell for classes to start and the day to end. They make different sounding rings. It really works as well as all the others, and my grandchildren love to hear the bells.

This was often called a parlor clock. My mom used this one as an example to make the one I showed you in the above picture.

Mantel clock that would grace the mantel in most homes of the day. I love how ornate this one is without being too over the top.
I so appreciate having such cherished memories of my mom and dad and everytime I see these clocks it reminds me of them. They were wonderful parents. Thanks for stopping by, I always look forward to your visits.

Hello Girlfriend...
ReplyDeleteOhhh my...what a fabulous collection of clocks that you have!!! Not only are they such a beautiful addition to the decor of your home but they are such treasured keepsakes...it just doesn't get any better than that, my friend!!! Your mama was an accomplished woodcrafter...the clock cabinet that she made is stunning! I just love the two smaller clocks to the left of the clock that your mom made...the ornate patterns are fabulous! Of course, I had to enlarge your photos to savor the details! The old school clock really fascinates me...with all of the different bells! I would probably be right in there with your grandchildren...ringing the bells! Hehe!!! Your mantel clock is gorgeous...Ohhh, I could see that in my home! Seeing all of your beautiful clocks reminded me that I have a clock that my Grandpa gave me...a beautiful old regulator clock in a pretty oak cabinet, waiting for me in Texas. Hopefully I can bring it home with me when I go down to Texas for a visit in June! Such special memories...treasures!!!
Thank you so much for sharing your clock collection with us...I really enjoyed seeing each clock...enlarging the photos and savoring their sweet details!
Have a fabulous Friday, my friend!

Hi Marty,
ReplyDeleteHe probably will not know anything definite on deploying until July.
I'm still holding out for a slim hope that it won't happen this year.
He's only 36 so the chances of going back are high before he retires though.
I'll have to keep it quiet for privacy reasons if the time does come soon.
I'll e-mail just a few of my close blog friends with the details.
Thanks for being so sweet and supportive about it.
I really appreciate it so much.
Have a wonderful weekend.
~Melissa :)

ReplyDeleteVisiting from Kelli's Show and Tell blogtrain!
ReplyDeleteWhat a WONDERFUL collection of clocks. As I read the history, I find myself moved, for it occured to me, that they ticked away the minutes of her life, now they tick the minutes PAST her death, but on the other hand they are ticking the time till you see her again in Heaven.
How wonderful, I enjoyed my visit here!
Seeing all your clocks brings back such good memories of my childhood. I come from an extended family of clock lovers. My mom loves old clocks, especially those that chime. Unfortunately those chimes make it hard to sleep when we spend the night. My mom usually has to turn them off. Also, my mom has the exact same mantel clock you showed in the last photo. It is my favorite of her clocks. I sort of have a clock thing too, but mine are not old & mine do not chime.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty clocks--but the memories behind them are even more special.
ReplyDeleteHave a good weekend☺
Hi Marty,
ReplyDeletei love all your beautiful clocks and the history behind them. Have a wonderful week-end, Cindy

I was just looking at those beautiful clocks and wondering how many of them work. I love to hear ticking and chiming clocks. The clock your Mom made must be so special to you. It's a beauty. Funny thing, while I was reading here, I flashed back to my Grandmother's clock in her parlor with the old pump organ. I hadn't thought about that in years. Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful collection.
ReplyDeleteMarty, you have to possess one of the loveliest collections I've seen. What precious memories they evoke in you. Thanks so much for sharing. AND ... you have them displayed so well.

ReplyDeleteMarty, what a gorgeous collection of clocks. You have them displayed so beautifully. My Mom is a collector of clocks started by my Dad. I am lucky to have 2 of his clocks one which resembles yours,I think they are actually called kitchen clocks in the late 1890s the other is similar to your black clock in your dinette, you have seen mine of my mantel. I wish I had picts of all of my Moms I think you would really enjoy them and I will have to show her your collection, I know she will be drooling. Thank you for sharing another wonderful part of your life.Hugs, Kathysue
